How to Make Paper Dolls

Making a paper doll is an excellent way to create the perfect gift for someone. The doll can be decorated according to personal taste. Since the paper doll is lightweight, it is inexpensive for mailing purposes. The project is a creative craft idea that is fabulous for making crafts with friends. Doll shapes can vary. I have used round, rectangle, triangle, and square shapes. Personally, my favorite is the triangle because it looks more realistic. It is best to keep the shape simple so that it will not compete with other elements of the doll.

This project is easy to make and only requires a few household items. I use recycled cardboard for the head and body. I also use scrapbook paper for the face and clothing. These days, I have implemented the use of lace as a clothing alternative. I think the lace softens the look of the paper doll. To keep the cost low, I use soft yarn for the hair. It is less expensive than doll hair at the craft store. Pearls or buttons create arms and legs for the doll. Lately, I have been using pearls to save money. The pearls cost less than the buttons.

There are so many different colors of yarn. There is something to match every hair color. The biggest challenge for me was to find the correct shade of black. It has lovely blended colors of purple, grey, navy blue, and brown. Another challenge was the color of blonde. I started using the basic color yellow. Sometimes, I like to have fun with the hair and use purple or pink. I only do this when I want a whimsical look.

This project is an excellent way to explore one's creative artistry. Silk rosettes are awesome for embellishing the doll. I have also used seam binding and lace to make ribbons for the hair. Fashion a necklace out of colorful pearls or acrylic beads to decorate the doll with jewelry. Create a set and make a card to go with the handmade doll. Artist Talent Booking Agents - How to Get Signed!

For years I've watched and listened as potential hit artists would make their pitch with little aim or direction. Not knowing the ins and the outs of the industry or what they were really asking. As a former talent booking agent for William Morris Endeavor, I can tell you that the vast majority of artists who need and want an agent, don't have a clue as to how to go about obtaining one. So how does it all go down?

Whenever I look at an act there a number of things that enter the equation, but the biggest one and this is true for any potential booking agent, is "what's in it for me?" This is not necessarily a selfish question, but a question of reality. How many acts can I possibly take on where I'm grasping at straws trying to sell the act to a potential club owner.
 Let's look at potential club date so you understand the big picture of the job that an agent has to fill day in and day out. The agent calls the club owner, and by the way, the club owner who wears many hats in his or her small business, is signing for the beer delivery, and at the same time, entertaining the idea of the agent's act, but feels a lack of ambition coming on, and here's why.

The club owner has, let's say 250 seats, that they can sell tickets with. The local band, that brings in a fairly large crowd, who eats there and buys drinks, etc comes with their own sound equipment, along with their reliable friends who will fill a bunch of the house and spend money. Now you're on the other end of the line, as an agent, and you are trying to get a guarantee, along with sound and lights and now this club owner has to spend money and advertise, because nobody knows who your act is. As the club owner, do you take on the risk, or do you just fly with the local act? That's what you're up against.

Your obtaining an agent isn't about the logic that he or she can just make some calls, and you've got some gigs to play. It's way beyond that. And besides the traditional brick and mortar agencies, the market is now flooded with cyber agents who have limited rolls, working mainly to obtain the potential promoter and they are not as interested in the signing of new acts - the playing field has significantly changed. In some ways that's good and in some not so good.

So what do you do as an artist? Some of that depends on where you are at within your career. How much buzz have your received with Indie air play or downloads, etc. What is it about your career that would want to cause an agent to say yes? Take the time to answer that question. What's in it for them? If you can find some ways to answer those questions, you're much closer to the potential deal. Here are some ideas. Try giving the potential agent a smaller percentage on your record sales - make it worth their while. After all, the big labels are all creating 360 deals where they take a percentage of the record, a percentage of merchandising and a percentage on publishing.

Find ways to answer that question of, "What's in it for me" and you'll be much closer. Now if you're selling a bunch of records and you've got some traction, than obviously, you've got more options - that's just a fact. But if I were some of you, I would get creative and find ways to sweeten the deal with a good agent, one who is going to reward you with time and effort. Perhaps you can make an arrangement where you work "X" number of hours creating social media content for yours and other acts that they represent. Perhaps you offer them a percentage of the agent's fee that is a little higher and perhaps you work it down after a period of time when your career starts taking off.

 Maybe you tell them, I'll mail everything out and follow up by such and such. I'm just getting creative, because at the end of the day, there has to be an answer to the what's in it for the agent - there just has to be. And no, it's not good enough to grab a typical percentage on a baby act requiring much more energy and time on the phone. There are better ways to spend that time and other acts that require a lot less of it - that's just a fact.

On the positive side of the equation, there is always room at the top, but you'll have to push and be creative to grab the attention of those who can help you get there. Evaluate your career to see how you can approach an agent and to what extent you'll have pull in the current state of your career. Look at creative ways to bridge the equation and make it worth their while. Always have a polished and pro EPK available along with your great sounding music.

How to Be a Good Make-Up Artist

Make-up Artists are key members of any production team. They work across multiple disciplines, ranging from fashion to music to commercials and films.

In any video or film, both hair and make-up are an important element. A good Make-up Artist could easily transform a modern man into a Victorian woman in a snap; or a worn out support artist into a supermodel! It won't be too much to say that they possess a magical brush that could change the fate of any average Joe.

Not surprisingly, they are often the first port of call for any cast member. This first meeting with the talent is really important as it sets the tone for the shoot. A good Make-up Artist can gauge the nerves and do his bit to relax them. It's all the more important when the shoot involves shedding inhibitions or clothes in a début or a nude scene.

Often a Make-up Artist acts as a confidante, playing the part of a sounding board for the talent. You could easily think of them as being in the counsellor's chair in addition to their own. Contrary to popular beliefs, Make-up Artists don't just slap-on the make-up; they are experienced in every manner of production and know what is required. They adapt quickly to the needs of their client, at times working at a minute's notice.

Experienced make-up artists go through the script and shot list for the day in advance, just so they can assess timings and any alternative actions that may be needed.

Some make-up types may require a hefty amount of time, for example the prosthetic make-up can take four or more hours. Their role is also crucial as the directors and producers are often busy with the shoot and only get to look at the talent when they arrive from the green room. Getting the look right is thus, that much more important!

When a complicated set-up is involved, such as period drama wasp waist corsets, beehive hair styles, wigs and white faces; the Make-up Artist would factor all this into their proposal for the team to play around.

A good make-up artist would offer shelter to the talent from all the madness going around on the set, in the comforts of the green room. They can't get involved in all the ruckus as any mistake on their part would mean wiping all the make-up off and starting all over again.

Once their work is accepted on the set, they continue to pamper up the actors working under hot lights. Continuous action sequences or repeated changes in weather lead to periodic make-up changes as well. A good Make-up Artist takes the heat off the director.

When it is a large shoot, the Chief Make-up Artist would work with the top stars and others in the department work with the cast. Sometimes, they might just be applying make-up to an endless stream of extras without setting their foot on the set.

There may be times when they are brought in as consultants on previous projects they have worked, and other times they might just be focussing on blood and guts in the prosthetic department.

However on smaller shoots, Make-up Artists share more responsibility and are more deeply involved in the actual filming. They may have to meet with the production team and work closely together with them on the overall look and feel of the project, or help decide on 3rd party suppliers for things such as prosthetics.

They not only help with the make-up part, but also are responsible for creative inputs to the director. They also remain aware of any allergies that the subjects may have and make sure that they don't affect the application process.

Make-up Artists go from creating a look to touch up to creating another look, all in a span of hours on the set. They are always involved and never too busy for a quick perking up of the artist.

A. What a great idea! What better place for a movie quiz than a movie review site. When you are thinking about what type of movie quiz to develop, try to think a bit outside of the box. While the temptation is strong to take the easy way out by asking the "no brainer" questions like "Which movie won best Picture in 2003?", you're likely to find that you won't draw very many quiz participants.

A good movie quiz is challenging in the same way that a good crossword puzzle is. Opt for questions that will make people think hard, or actually have to search the Internet for the answer.
 For example, how many people would know the answer to this question off the top of their head?

"What famous rock star was paid to come and watch the Beatles perform when he was a young boy?"
The answer? I'm not going to tell you. But I'll tell you this, you can find out on the Internet.

Now if you can come up with killer movie quiz questions like that one, and maybe offer a cash prize to each month's winner (be sure to change the questions each month), then your movie review site is going to get a great reputation as a butt-kicking movie quiz site as well.

I guess you could consider having a different movie quiz for different skill levels. You could take it all the way down to simple kid's movie quiz for the youngsters in your audience. Be careful about collecting names and addresses of children 13 and younger though, th U.S. Government frowns on that practice even if it's for something as innocent as a movie quiz.

7. Do stop playing when you become bored or indifferent. There is a natural starting and stopping point to playing. Just like anything, when you feel yourself growing disinterested, stop playing.

Here are 10 ways to expand your subscriber list:

1. Keep your subscription form easy to find on every web page. Preferably, add it on your navigational bar. If the form is to large for the bar or page, add a hyperlink and send them to a popup or a separate page so that the previous page on your site doesn't disappear. It is easy for them to return.

2. Not only must the form be easy to see, it also needs to be easy to read. Label each field. I've seen a few where I didn't know what to enter. Be kind to computer readers suffering from dry eyes, make the font large and easy to read.

3. Do you write your own EzineArticles? Add a "please subscribe here line to your byline. Begin the line with a benefit they get from subscribing and then add a few invitational words along with a URL hyperlink. Example: "Learn more about this topic. Subscribe to [name of your ezine] by visiting...."
4. Generally, people are impulse buyers. So, give them that impulse. Give away a free ebook. Instead of letting them see that the ebook is free. Regularly charge for the eBook. Six dollars is a good price, just explain them that it is a limited special offer.

They will perceive it even more valuable when there is a price connected to it. An example of the wording could go like, "Normally this ebook sells for $6 at [your web site URL or even a middle man ebook site]." Always give them a reason why you are giving it to them free. Ask if they could recommend your ezine to a few of their friends. You can also attend their networking events and ask, ask, ask.
7. Instead, or in addition to, calling the gatekeepers you have identified on the membership lists, you can send them a letter of introduction -- a direct mail piece. The piece can ask them (a call to action) to visit your web site for more information on your newsletter and/or receive a copy of the free but-not-free ebook.

8. Share the wealth. Exchange recommendations to each other's newsletter. Be prepared for these so that it doesn't cost you valuable time when you are working on a deadline. If you work with a virtual assistant, let them respond to these opportunities. Prepare three or four examples and offer the exchanger their choice to use one that they feel is appropriate for their audience. Ask them for a reciprocal and equal announcement.

9. Make comments and include your byline at the end. Comments can be product review on Amazon, ezines you enjoy, or local newspapers. Give suggestions, share your stories on how it helped you, ask questions, or give ideas that emerged from your reading. Blogs are also good places to comment on as well.

10. It takes 7 times before people start to trust. Present them 7 opportunities to have two-way conversations with you. Not one-way conversations (you write, they read). Provide the two-way with surveys, questions, contests, games, things that they need to ask for are just a few. If you are offering a contest, send them a testimonial from the winner. If you can, create an opportunity for many winners. It spreads the hope.

The Bachelor - A Psychological Study

True Confessions: The Bachelor is one of my all time favorite shows. You can unfriend, delete me, or act like I am dead now, it would be justified. Even Truer Confession:
 I have been watching The Bachelor since the beginning of the series when I was in high school. Granted, I skipped a few seasons, the first Bachelorette, the old dude, and part of Ben and Jake's seasons, but I have seen a lot of the show. I used to watch the show and think, "Wow! They are so in love. I want that one day." Now I am less naive or more cynical and just think they are in love with fame and Dancing With the Stars contracts.

So why continue to watch the show? Because these people are often very messed up. I love watching the show and diagnosing people based on the footage the editors and producers let viewers see. It is such a fun psychological study. Just in case you were wondering I think Sean is addicted to adventure (sensation seeker for my psych students) and codependent. He loves keeping the girls who need emotional help and rescuing. He kept girls on way to long because it appeared he wanted to save them from the emotional trauma they endured at some point in their life.

That is until this week when he said goodbye to AshLee. I am sure she is a sweet girl and I do not want to seem like I do not value that she has had trauma in her life. However, I think that she needs a counselor, not a fiance or husband. I saw this in her right away and honestly hoped that Sean would send her home sooner. She was so needy and still emotional about her childhood that it was clear that she needed to do some work on herself before she would make a good partner for a man when she dealt with some stuff.

As she was talking this week I felt bad for her. She made comments about being whole or complete because of Sean and I could not help but wince. I thought of my favorite pastor, Dr. Scott Daniels at Paz Naz, and remembered the times I have heard him say that relationships do not work if two people are seeking to complete one another. Instead, they need to be two whole, complete people on their own and enter the relationship complete in themselves and in Christ.

Personally, I love this idea of two complete people entering into a commitment with one another and with Christ. It is saying I am good with who I am and who God has made me and I want to share that with you completely. You do not have to fix me, take care of me, or complete me. Let's share life together and follow God together.

As I look back on my life I can say that I probably was not in that place for a good part of my early and mid 20s. Now I feel so much more comfortable with who I am and feel complete in Christ. I am not married so I am not writing this from a place of personal expertise, except that I am an observer and counselor. The relationships that I see working and healthy are the ones where both partners know who they are and love and support the other person for who they are. I really hope that one day I do fall in love in a relationship like this, but I know if I do not my life is valuable and meaningful the way it is too.

The period 1740 to 1900 is referred to as the golden age of European Papier-Mâché. During this period it became the fashionable alternative and imitation of authentic Oriental lacquer.
 The technique was used to manufacture all things small and decorative, giving rise to today's antique collectibles such as snuff boxes and spectacle cases that are now so widely collected. This article will give a brief history of the rise of the craft and it will highlight the key people in its development in Britain.

Papier-Mâché has a rich and global heritage that began in China where paper was developed during the Han dynasty. An ingenious process created paper, through breaking down plants into fibres, that were then pounded into pulp and dried as paper; the craft of "recycling" paper is where the material originated. It was used to make a variety of objects and was renowned for being very strong but also very light. The knowledge of paper-making and the craft spread to Japan, the Middle East, India and Europe.

With the growth of world-wide trade, Chinese and Japanese lacquer ware became very popular in Europe and a flourishing trade in these products grew.
 They were in great demand due to the quality of their lacquer; beautifully crafted, exquisitely painted and decorated, made these products ideal gifts and featured furniture in many European households. During the golden years it did not take long for demand to exceeded supply! This was the green light for the entrepreneurial European craftsmen to seize the opportunity to imitate the success of Lacquer ware and create an indigenous alternative.

Due to the European climate it was near impossible to use the Eastern plants and methods. They had to find an alternative to the Lacquer ware.
 Workshops sprang up across Europe mainly in France and England to produce home-grown imitations of Lacquer- ware.
 In central England, in the 18th century Papier-Mâché became one of the most important crafts with shops being established primarily in London and the Midlands with Birmingham seen as the center and home of Industry. From the 1740s the process known as "Japanning" became one of the most widely used processes to imitate "Lacquer ware" with items such as snuff boxes.

The history of "Japanning" a technique of varnishing and polishing, to give a smooth glossy finish is likely to have originated with a Birmingham based manufacturer John Baskerville, who was famous for his success in imitating the lacquered pieces from Japan. Linked to Baskerville is his even more acclaimed assistant Henry Clay, who invented and patented (1772) an innovation to produce laminated panels from pasted paper rather than pulped paper. With his technique the panels were sealed with linseed oil making it very strong. It was said that it was equally as durable as wood and as such was used for furniture and other everyday items. This "new" material was ideally suited to "Japanning" (varnishing) and painting: thus together provided the beginning to Britain`s answer to Oriental lacquer.

Clay and his success led to the most famous partnership in the British history of the Papier-Mâché industry, "Jennens and Bettridge", they bought Clay's Birmingham factory in 1816; and from there went from strength to strength and became respected in the antique world for the quality of their products. They are acknowledged for introducing decorative inlays, such as mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, ivory and precious stones. In their heyday they exhibited a number of their products at London's Great Exhibition of 1851, this was the pinnacle for Papier-Mâché as it was hailed as an important material with a bright future!

Large scale production lasted for about a hundred years in Europe but began to decline from about 1870 with the development of other more durable materials.

As an antique collectable Papier-Mâché is popular for boxes of all types, cases, paper/ letter stands, trays, picture frames and Lamp stands. The craft is known for their beautiful decoration, hand painted portraits, landscapes, coats of arms and classical motifs to name but a few with the addition of inlays such as mother of pearl, tortoiseshell, and other precious metals and stones.

Why Anime is Just As Good

Lots of people consider anime to be the realm of geeks. After all, it's just cartoons right? I say that's ignorance.

Much like early Disney, anime; and the western animated films and shows based on it, are not afraid to tackle real issues. Sometimes this involves wacky metaphors, sometimes it's just brutally in your face about it.

Anime allows a story teller to take on just about any possible subject. Does that occasionally result in shows and movies so bizarre you wonder what the writers are on? Yes, but I can say the same for many live action TV shows too.

Like everything it's all a matter of taste, yet some people put down anime fans in general. Two people might love mystery's, but if one likes anime mystery's, the other one might hold an attitude ranging from insulting to downright disdain.

Why is that I wonder? I have yet to figure out what is so "nerdish" about anime. To me it's just another form of entertainment. A rich 'mind scape' of possibilities to explore. I can watch any genre, and some only available as anime.

I suppose the crux of it, is that some people just need to feel superior to others. After all, the video game and computer was once the realm of geeks. Now the people that don't play games and know computers are the weird ones. Perhaps it's just a matter of time till us narutards are the norm.
